Everyone can help end Parkinson’s disease.

My dad was a marathon runner and ran his first marathon in NYC in 1980. I used to run the last block with him whenever he was doing a long training run. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 47 years of age (I was 7 at the time). Ever since then, running became much more than a hobby to me. I ran in high school and college and have run 9 marathons (forwards) up until 7 years ago. My favorite, of course is the NYC marathon.

Seven years ago I was diagnosed with Runner's Dystonia. As with Parkinson's disease, my brain and body no longer communicate properly. I can still run forward for short distances, but anything longer and my legs lose some control and I have to stop. Because I did not ever want to stop running I found that by running backwards (and running up stairs) I could trick my brain into running for longer. I have since ran up the Empire State Building and completed 4 half marathons BACKWARDS.

This November I plan to run the NYC marathon in a fundraising effort for Team Fox to help people with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. Team Fox is the grassroots community fundraising program at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). MJFF accelerates high-impact science through smart risk taking and problem solving with a commitment to urgency and efficiency. I’m one of thousands of people around the globe who are turning their passions into Team Fox fundraisers to help them speed a cure for Parkinson’s. When you give today, 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF’s programmatic efforts.

My fundraising goal for the marathon is $3200 and my personal goal is to run the entire marathon backwards (if my body will allow it). I do this to remember my father who I feel is with me on all my runs and to help those who are currently suffering the way he did.

Be stronger than the disorder!

Thank you for your time and for being part of this team!

Justine - I recently read about your story and find you very inspiring. My dad is currently battling Parkinson's, so I am especially touched by your tale. I've been running 5Ks for a few months, and cannot even imagine running a marathon. Congratulations on your incredible achievement and thank you for running to help fight this disease.
