Bank Of America Chicago Marathon

Jimmy Choi

Hello everyone! It is that time of the year again. I am toeing the line at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for the 6th time. This is my flagship race. This is where it all started for me, and though my abilities have changed, one thing hasn't - my desire to help find disease-modifying treatments in my lifetime.

In 2012, I decided to run the Chicago Marathon about a month before the race was to take place. I was still new to running and who knew that 45,000 other people are crazy enough to PAY to run 26.2 miles? It was sold out, and I could no longer sign up for the race. The only way in was via charity bib. And that is how I found Team Fox.

On October 7, 2012 I ran my first ever marathon at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Team Fox. In doing so, I showed myself that I can overcome my challenges. Since then, I have continued to push my limits beyond running, cycling, swimming, flipping pizzas, and climbing on obstacles.
And most importantly, I have made connections through all of my Team Fox runs.

While I prepped for that first marathon run, you (FaceBook world) heard my story for the first time. And I have to say it has been a contributing factor to how I live well despite PD. The show of support from everyone was nothing short of awe-inspiring to me. YOU made me want to be better, and for that, I thank YOU. That first year, YOU helped me raise more than $5000 for Team Fox.

What YOU didn't know is that in one month's time,
YOU helped me raise awareness and funds for research by listening to me tell my story.
YOU helped me connect with a support system that is critical to how I cope with PD known as Team Fox.
YOU helped me do MORE for the Parkinson's community than I did in the previous 8 years of my diagnosis COMBINED.

The realization of that impact has pushed Cherryl and I to always try to do better. That realization is the drive behind Shake It Off 5K, all the running, the Sub 5 achievement, American Ninja Warrior, and so much more.
YOU have made an impact on me.

I have always said to others dealing with PD to never give up what you love to do, or what you are meant to do. Just find different ways to do it. The methods of my dedication to raising awareness have always been running. After more than 100 races at distances of 13.1 miles or more, it has started to take a toll on my body and it is time to find other ways to raise awareness. As such, the 2017 Chicago Marathon will be my LAST Chicago Marathon.

I am not as fast as I used to be but I am stronger, physically and mentally. Progression has not stopped, but I have learned new ways to handle the challenges thrown my way. I have become a louder, stronger advocate for Parkinson's research as I have seen first-hand how funding can advance innovation.

I renew my pledge to fight Parkinson's. Stayed tuned as I plan to kick it up a notch. It may be less distance involved, but I guarantee it will take no less in effort.

The pipeline for new treatment options is greater than ever. YOU are making a difference by supporting Team Fox and The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. So for the last time as a Chicago Marathon participant, I ask for your support by pledging any amount you can to help advance research. 100% of your donation will go directly to high-impact research programs.

Five million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease — a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder. In the United States, 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. There is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease. But through your support of Team Fox, you can help change this.

Everyone can help end Parkinson’s disease.
An estimated five million people worldwide live with Parkinson's today. It is the second most common neurological disorder. In the United States, approximately 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. There is no known cure.

Together, we can change this.

Team Fox is the grassroots community fundraising program at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). MJFF accelerates high-impact science through smart risk taking and problem solving with a commitment to urgency and efficiency. I’m one of thousands of people around the globe who are turning their passions into Team Fox fundraisers to help them speed a cure for Parkinson’s. When you give today, 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF research programs.
