I am riding the Pedaling for Parkinson’s event in memory of my student Joe, who defied all medical books, by beating a diagnosis of Parkinson’s for the first six year
which then turned into a Parkinsonism diagnosis called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. A disease that lands most people in 24-hour-care within 3-to-4 years, and an early death in 6-to 9-years. Joe, through the power of exercise (medicine didn’t work for him) defied all the odds for 16 years, and we even dug out of hospice and gained an extra year that he enabled him to see his grandson be born. The first thing Joe did when he got out of hospice was come to cycle class. His story is rare and remarkable. It’s also one that I share often as a beacon of hope for others facing this disease to see what can be accomplished through exercise. Joe was 64, a doctor, a husband, a father, a friend, a new grandfather, and someone everyone was inspired by in our Parkinson’s community.

I work every day with Parkinson’s people. I see them work diligently to regain parts of themselves that the disease has taken away.  They work tirelessly to bring their symptoms under control. To feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is a daily struggle. I just read in a new book called, “Ending Parkinson’s Disease” (Dorsey, Sherer, Okun, Bloem) an alarming statistic.  In1990,  2.6 million people globally had Parkinsons. In 2015,  6.3 million people had Parkinsons. And projected for 2040, 12.9 million people will have Parkinsons. Every time I meet someone anywhere, and tell them that I am a Parkinson’s Wellness Coach, they always say they know someone with Parkinsons.

If you know someone with Parkinson’s and want to help in the research for Parkinson’s I appreciate it. And all my students are biking with me on this ride. Our goal is to ride as a group 500 miles. And my personal milage goal is 200 miles. My students love a challenge!
