Hello Everyone,

I would like to start off by thanking everyone that generously donated to our team (Team FHP) for the 2021 ride.  We very much appreciate your participation and conviction toward this cause.  Also my apology in advance for this tl;dr email, but please do take a moment to review.

For 2022, it still seems like someone may have hacked my email, if someone with my BMI is still participating in a 40 mile bike ride; however, I can reassure that’s not the case.  This is a cause that in each year becomes even more important to not just me, but anyone and everyone impacted by Parkinson’s.

If we had this conversation, even 10 years ago, I might have remembered a person, or two, that had Parkinson’s Disease (“PD”).  That said, in the last 10 years, Dani and I have had more and more exposure to this awful disease. For Dani and I, PD first hit especially close to home when one of our closest friends received a Parkinson’s diagnosis in his early 40’s.  As we watched (and shared) the anxiety, uncertainty and concern that the family is facing, we began to have a greater appreciation of the number of people and families that have similar experiences, not just in our lives but across the board.

We then felt the impact again, father of a good friend was diagnosed, then at the beginning of April 2022, PD finally took the life of the mother of a good friend.  In having this additional exposure, we have now seen the full spectrum and timeline of effects and the results are not pretty.

Our experience, unfortunately, is not uncommon.  In fact, more than six million people worldwide live with Parkinson's today. It is the second most common neurological disorder. In the United States, approximately 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone

As I’ve considered ways that I can help, asking about the preferred foundation for Parkinson’s Research, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) emerged as the perennial choice, among many, if not all.  MJFF is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today.

So, how did we get to the bike ride?  Friends of mine, who (themselves) have been impacted by PD founded the Pedaling4Parkinsons annual ride as an event to help grow awareness for PD, as well as to benefit PD research.   As I mentioned before, Michael Black and I participated in the event last year and, based on our experience, determined that we would not only participate again this year, but we would also look to expand our team.  Essentially, this is our preferred event.

After re-reading this email, it’s possible my account (or my brain) was hijacked for this one.  Let’s keep in mind that I will be riding on a borrowed bike utilizing mostly borrowed equipment….so wagers on my performance (as donations) are strongly encouraged.

Thank you so much for any consideration you can provide for this great cause. 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF’s programmatic efforts.  The link to my fundraising page is here: Jeffrey Sussman - Pedaling 4 Parkinson’s 2022 (michaeljfox.org)

Thank you again for your consideration,

Jeff
