I finished my first 60 mile run! Here's a writeup:
I’m raising money for Parkinson’s disease research this year. I’m running two races, one 60 miles and the other 60 kilometers and I’m hoping to get as many people as I can to donate $60 ($1/mile or kilometer!) - but of course ANY amount is great!: (click here to donate $60: or use the buttons at the right to donate any other amount)

Wow! My Dad has agreed to match every donation up to $3,200! I'll be posting the matching amount every month... of course in $60 increments!

I'm the kind of runner that needs a goal to train. I happened to get old in January of this year... I turned 60. My first thought was "run Tussey again, but start from home and add 10 miles". The Tussey Mountainback is a 50 mile hilly ultra-marathon in central Pennsylvania. My second thought was, "that's stupid". I've run it a few times before always thinking "never again" towards the end. Then I thought about adding to a marathon to make it 60 kilometers. But it wasn't enough, after all, 60 is just a number.

My Dad has been dealing with Parkinson's Disease for about 10 years. He's a retired Air Force fighter pilot and has always been very active. He played tennis, squash, pickleball, etc. until just a few years ago when Parkinson's made those activities impossible. I know it's extremely frustrating for him, especially since most people don't understand the disease. They want to be helpful, but even doctor's and nurses don't understand freezing spells, and try to assist by pulling him along; when he needs to wait it out until he can move his legs again.

In any case, I've been following the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research for several years, and decided to attempt to raise money for Parkinson's research this year. That's something worth running for!

Remember that 60 at 60? The ideas above grew on me, so...I'm training for two races: the New York City Marathon on November 4th, and the Tussey Mountainback on October 7th. I'm going to add a few miles to both races, you know because 60! For the Tussey Mountainback I'm going to start with a 10 mile warm-up to make it 60 miles, and for the New York marathon I'm going to add a 17.8 kilometer cool-down to make it 60 kilometers.

What can you do? Please contribute to the Foundation... I'm hoping to convince as many people as I can during 2018 to contribute $1/mile or kilometer, or $60. It would be great to get 60 people to contribute $60! Even better, with 101 people the donated amount reaches $6060! - but of course ANY amount is great!: (click here to donate $60: or use the buttons at the right to donate any other amount)

If you're interested in learning more about my Dad, please check out his book "A Flight Through Life"! ( We'll be donating all proceeds from book sales to the Foundation!

Everyone can help end Parkinson’s disease.

An estimated five million people worldwide live with Parkinson's today. It is the second most common neurological disorder. In the United States, approximately 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. There is no known cure.

Together, we can change this.

Team Fox is the grassroots community fundraising program at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). MJFF accelerates high-impact science through smart risk taking and problem solving with a commitment to urgency and efficiency. I’m one of thousands of people around the globe who are turning their passions into Team Fox fundraisers to help them speed a cure for Parkinson’s. When you give today, 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF’s programmatic efforts.
Thank you for being part of this team!
