Two Marathons Are Better Than One - NYC and Boston

Bret Parker

Bret Parker

I continue to be so grateful to my friends and family for the generous support of my work with the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Since my diagnosis 14 years ago, collectively we have raised over $700,000 for Parkinson's research through Team Fox. How cool is that?! Despite the excellent progress on research (2 of the drugs I take now were made available only in the past few years), there's still no cure, and treatments are effective with only mixed success. So once again, I'm turning to you for support and inspiration. The first marathon I ran was the New York City Marathon in 1996 -- 25 years ago. That started it all! Last year would have been the 50th Anniversary of the NYC Marathon, which got canceled so I'm going to run/walk/hobble it this year for my 6th time. Either way, I need to make this public commitment to shame and push myself into getting off my ass. I've gained 14 pounds (then lost 7) during the past year (apparently that's below average for pandemic weight gain for men), requiring cortisone injections in my hip and am out of shape despite the fact that last July I biked 496 miles for Team Fox and 3 years ago I ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 straight days m. Exercise helps! I'm continuing to battle the disease and remain optimistic, but the symptoms continue to worsen a little bit at a time. And just to keep it interesting, I'll be doing the Boston Marathon for the first time just a month before NYC. One of the most iconic sporting events, the Boston Marathon is something I've thought about doing for a long time. I'm trying to hard to think of it as just a long training run to prepare me for NYC, but somehow that doesn't ease my concerns. Since I'm doing my part, I humbly ask if you would consider making a donation now. Five million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease — a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder. In the United States, 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. When you give today, 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF research programs. Thanks again and looking forward to seeing you all soon! Best, Bret
