For my Dad: A Barefoot Ironman Triathlon

Tom Brouns

Five million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease — a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder.

One of those people is my Dad. He discovered running only after he retired from a career in the Army and had the option of running for the sheer joy of it, rather than because he had to.

For nearly 20 years, he ran for the love of the sport - 10k's, half marathons, full marathons... he qualified for and completed the Boston Marathon, joined the Oregon Track Club and officiated at track meets in Eugene, Oregon as a volunteer, and frequently placed in his age group. He's got a wall full of medals, race numbers, photos and other memorabilia.

Then he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. In the beginning, he was able to remain active. In fact, after he turned 70, he was still running a sub-2-hour half marathon.

Then, prlbably due to the disease, he suffered a serious fall. Since then, the disease has progressed quickly. He can't run anymore - in fact, he he struggles with basic tasks. The progression of this disease is different for everyone.

In honor of my Dad, his legacy as a runner and volunteer, and his heroic efforts to fight this disease, I signed up as a Team Fox fundraiser to support efforts to find a cure for Parkinson's Disease.

Since July 2017, I have been training to complete my first Ironman Triathlon. That's 2.4 miles of ocean swimming, 112 miles on a bike, and a marathon to top it off. As an extra challenge, I'll attempt to complete the marathon barefoot.

Many generous donors already contributed $1,025 on my 2017 fundraising page. For MJFF tax purposes, I had to set up a new page in 2018 and I hoping to raise that total to $2,500 before I go to Ironman South Africa on April 15, 2018.

Thanks for considering making a donation. Every dollar helps find a cure, and 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF research programs.

Best - Tom
