Welcome to My Team Fox Mark Kelm Page

Mark Kelm

Did you know that the VA estimates that there are 80,000 veterans with Parkinson’s Disease? I am one of them. There is no cure for Parkinson’s (yet), but there are several treatment options, including medications and other therapies to help with the symptoms. Veterans are at an increased risk for Parkinson’s Disease due to chemical exposures or traumatic brain injuries that occurred during service.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a disorder of the central nervous system, characterized by the death of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. The disease causes a variety of "motor" symptoms (symptoms related to movement of the muscles), including rigidity, delayed movement, poor balance, and tremors. Non-motor symptoms of PD include sleep disturbances, urinary dysfunction, constipation, swallowing problems, mood disorders and cognitive deficits.

NIH estimates that the disease affects at least 500,000 Americans, mostly people over age 50. The average age of onset is about 60. My journey with Parkinson’s Disease began with mild symptoms at the age of 38. At the time my wife, Beth, and I had a baby, and 2 kids in lower school. It was a terrifying experience going to the neurologist and hearing the words Parkinson’s disease. Fast forward a decade and I am strongly engaged in fighting this disease. I have a powerful team in my Movement Disorder Specialist, Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist and Occupational Therapist working with me to help me live a full life. Also, I receive amazing support from my friends at the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

I would like to thank my friends, neighbors, fellow Church members and the Chester Bird Post 523 American Legion for supporting me in helping us to find the cure! Through your support of Team Fox, you get us closer to ending this challenging disease.

Team Fox is the grassroots community fundraising program at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). I’m one of thousands of people around the globe who are turning their passions into Team Fox fundraisers to help them speed a cure for Parkinson’s.

I’m asking for your support in our race to put an end to PD. My personal goal is to raise $12,000. Please help me reach my goal by making a contribution. Donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law and, thanks to the support of an anonymous donor, 100 percent of your gift will go directly to Parkinson's research.
