About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease at age 49. It was a shock and hard to believe. My thinking at the time was that Parkinson's mainly affected older people. At first I was in denial because the symptoms were fairly mild and my hope was it was a misdiagnosis. After seeing a movement specialist at UCSF the diagnosis was confirmed.
For a couple of years I took my meds and tried to ignore the growing symptoms. At some point I knew it was time to face reality and acknowledge the fact that I have a degenerative disease. Through my research I found the Michael J Fox foundation. It has been the most informative and supportive organization I have come across.
The work they are doing to help people manage and understand their disease and also working towards a cure inspires me and gives me hope everyday.
At this point I have the disease fairly well managed. I feel this is a good time to be putting energy toward helping this great organization. I know there will be a time when I will need to focus on myself and may not be as capable to help others.
With that in mind I found Team Fox. Team Fox is the grassroots community fundraising program of The Michael J. Fox Foundation. For a long time I wanted to create a Team Fox team and fundraise for the cause but could never think of a good event to host. This winter my youngest daughter Vida and her boyfriend Greg are riding a tandem bicycle from Florida to California. She contacted me and asked if she and Greg could raise awareness of Parkinson's Disease and do a fundraiser as they ride across America.
That conversation turned into Team PDA and you can read about their journey here https://fundraise.michaeljfox.org/tf-2021/PDA
and if you feel inspired you can donate to the cause. When you give today, 100 percent of Team Fox proceeds go straight to MJFF’s programmatic efforts.
Five million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease — a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder. In the United States, 60,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone.
There is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease. But through your support of Team Fox, you can help change this.
Team Fox is the grassroots community fundraising program at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF).
