26.2 for Beverly Carter

Mckenna Carter
One of my greatest role models throughout my life has been my grandmother, Beverly Carter. At the young age of 84 years old, she remains the most beautiful, good hearted, and loving woman I have met. She gracefully and selflessly raised 5 incredible children, including my dad. I grew up admiring her adventurous attitude - she was always biking, hiking, ice skating, swimming and so much more. After watching her on the rink, I was inspired to pursue ice skating and spent my younger years competing, hoping to become even remotely as good as her. She is the most stunning ice skater I have ever seen. Unfortunately, Parkinson’s took away her movement and flexibility, altering her accessibility to participate in many of the joys and loves in her life. It has been very difficult watching her struggle with this demoralizing disease. However, her strength, patience and optimism during this challenging time have truly exemplified her angelic demeanor.

My nana was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over 14 years ago. She has always been a pillar of strength for me, and I hope to return the favor to her. During these last 14 years, I have always been looking for ways to support her and our family. When I was in college I joined a Parkinson’s club where I helped organize and host Pancakes for Parkinson’s events at Duke. All proceeds from our events went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Since graduating, I have discovered a new and exciting opportunity... I am running the San Francisco Marathon on July 24th in her honor. This is my first marathon, and I am more than honored to be raising money to fund research in hope for a much needed cure for Parkinson's.

Any and all support is deeply appreciated by my extended family and myself. My goal is to raise $5,000 for Team Fox. 100% of the Team Fox proceeds go to straight to the Michael J. Fox Foundation research programs. The Michael J. Fox Foundation accelerates high-impact science through smart risk taking and problem solving with a commitment to urgency and efficiency. Thank you for your consideration and support!
