"Shake and Freeze"

SHAKE AND FREEZE™ Campaign

Brrr! 🥶 Yes, WE are the ones who are making wearing shorts 🩳 in the winter... cool 😎 and for a good cause! SHAKE AND FREEZE™ Day is a Parkinson's Disease Awareness and FUNdraising Day, held annually on the first day of Winter (Winter Solstice), the "short"est day of the year - Dec. 21, 2022. It is the death anniversary (12/21/1824) of Dr. James Parkinson. World Parkinson's Day is held on his birthday, April 11... There are now TWO Dr. Parkinson anniversary days benefiting the PD Community!🌹❄️

We wear festive, eye catching shorts 🩳 on the "short"est day of the year in order to "Shake and Freeze" so that someday people with PD won't have to! Help us rid PD from our own personal family tree!🎄 Eight family members had PD ... and that's not so great!  😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

Our first year as Team Fox 🦊 "Shake and Freeze" (2018), we raised $11,000 and have reached MVP status 4-4 years! Last year (2021) we raised over $26,000!  ($68,500+ for MJFF since the "Shake and Freeze" idea was born!) Wearing shorts in the winter isn't such a bad idea after all! 😉

(FYI... The Alzheimer's Assoc. has a big fundraising campaign on the Summer Solstice, "The Longest Day". Wow... the top two neurological diseases have an awareness/fundraising day held on a solstice! 🌓🥶 🥵 Some say a cure for one will lead to a cure for the other!)

HISTORY OF "SHAKE AND FREEZE™” DAY:

"Shorts Day" was an actual "special" day that was published in "Chases Calendar of Events" in 1986 while I was an Activity Director in a nursing home (Phila. area). I was always looking for something different to do to entertain the residents, and improve employee moral, so I figured I would start my own "out of the box" day. Remember to listen for our day to be announced on the radio and TV this year! While you're at it, listen for our other special publicized day we originated back in the 80's -  "National Different Colored Eyes Day"! 😉 It was even featured on the TV game show “Jeopardy”!

My daughter and I tweaked "Shorts Day" into "SHAKE AND FREEZE™ Day/Shorts Day" in honor of my parents, who BOTH had PD! We were caregivers for them in our home for over 13+ years. We decided on "SHAKE AND FREEZE™” since some of the symptoms of PD are shaking (tremors) and freezing (gait dysfunction). Heck, wearing shorts in the Northeast can surely make people "SHAKE AND FREEZE"! 🥶

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Feel free to join in the fun! There is nothing more eye catching 😳 than people wearing shorts, let alone festive looking shorts and other attire, at an untimely time of the year! ❄️ Wear that ugly sweater too! "Ugly Sweater Day" is the Friday before our special day! Add lights, hats, and other decorations. If you have regular shorts, you can add festive socks/shoes. Get that permanent marker or glue gun out and decorate those boxers, jams, Bermudas, daisy dukes, culottes (my mom's fave) with tinsel and ornaments! Even if you live in the warmer weather 😎, you can decorate the shorts in a wintry or holiday theme to get attention. Challenge someone you know to wear shorts that day and don't forget to parade around the office/town to get attention. Have a dress down day and/or shorts decorating contest. Add a 50/50 raffle.

Our "Shake and Freeze" Season usually kicks into high gear when the holidays 🎄 start ramping up with significant FUNdraising starting on "Giving Tuesday" extending to New Year's Day.

2021 HIGHLIGHTS:

The PA House of Representatives gave us a Citation recognizing Dec. 21, 2021 as "SHAKE AND FREEZE™/Shorts Day" in the Commonwealth of PA and again in 2022!

We were "Parading for a Parkinson's Cure" and entered our first holiday parade  (Hatboro, PA), which is the largest in Montgomery County, PA.

We received our first large corporate donation (United States COLD Storage) and had increased support from other businesses as well. We purchased holiday props/photo backdrops, blow-up figures, bubble machines and even a life size Buddy the Elf cut-outs to bring that feel good Christmas spirit to others. We created our own official logo and even had Santa wearing shorts while picking the winner of our first 50/50!🎅🏻

Because we don't want anyone "Shaking and Freezing", whether or not you have PD, we collected cold weather gear for St. John's Hospice, which provides shelter/services for homeless men in Philadelphia.

We received a shout out about our campaign from "Shaky Radio"... all the way in Scotland!

2022 IDEAS:

Since people with PD "Shake and Freeze" ALL year round 😔, we are hoping to extend the season and bring more awareness by teaming up with water ice companies and breweries (Pints for Parkinsons) and others. Look for us at tailgates and other venues having impromptu "parades" with upbeat music with our recently purchased large portable loud speaker, "snow", and, of course, festive attire. You might just see us parading in official summer holiday town parades (4th of July/Halloween) or unofficially parading around like on the New Jersey boardwalks handing our "freeze" pops and other cool ❄️ items! 😎 We love "Partying for a Parkinson's Cure"! 🥳🤪

We are hoping to have increased media exposure... Podcasts/TV interviews. Join us at the TODAY show plaza and other morning shows to bring attention to our cause. Organized meet ups/5K? We would love to see TV weather people wear shorts since it IS a big meteorological event day too.☃️🌦

Want to join in our cause? We would love to team up with other PD organizations (Team Fox 🦊 members, Light of Day Foundation, Rock Steady Boxing etc.) to increase the awareness of this PD campaign. You raise money for yourself while teaming up with our idea until thousands of people wear shorts to match the thousands of dollars raised!  The idea is to bring the Parkinson Community together to raise funds to find a cure no matter who you are raising money for. We personally like the MJFF because of their well run charity! Would love to see Michael in some shorts! 😉

SPONSORS:

We are looking for sponsors to join the fun! How cool to see your name on one of our vehicles at a parade or on our frozen treats, ice packs, etc. Maybe have a collection of cold weather gear at your office for those in need? Chili ❄️ cook-off? Best milk shakes contest? Ice sculpture and sand sculpturing (snowman) contest?.

Anyone have connections to companies that have connection to ice/cold theme products or shorts?  WAWA "Shorti" hoagies, UPS brown shorts, Dairy Queen shakes and freezes, candy companies that make products like  "Sno Caps", "Ice" gum, 'Icebreakers", "Ice Cubes", Molson "Ice", Sea Isle Ice, Shake Shack, etc.

We are looking for fashion designers and/or schools to assist in an out of the ordinary fashion show featuring shorts.

Stay tuned as we hope to our have our campaign idea "snowball".  We believe that people with PD are like snowflakes... unique, beautiful ... but waaay cooler! 😎 Look for T-shirts and other fundraising products come to light. Look for implementation of Apple Air Tags, you tube and other media to bring attention to our cause. If you get attention, you can get more funds! #FLAUNTTHEFLAKE

*Oh, BTW, if you donate online, you will be eligible for gift card raffles at end of the year!  We want others to get a chance to get something for their kindness! 😊 It is a giving time of year! 🎅
