WV Fox Trot Website Q&A

Thank you for your interest in the 2021 Fox Trot for Parkinson's Research! The Fox Trot is a 5k walk or run through downtown Charleston beginning and ending at the Capitol Market. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, the world's largest private contributor to Parkinson's disease research.

The Fox Trot is organized by the Charleston Parkinson's Support Group (CPSG), a not-for-profit, 501c3 organization. CPSG will follow all Covid-19 protocols as directed by the city of Charleston and the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department at the time of the race.

Who can participate in the Fox Trot Walk?
Anyone can participate. We welcome individuals or a team of individuals to participate. Overall and age-category awards will be presented directly after the race.

What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that leads to the premature death of a chemical in the brain that is essential to smooth movement. Despite years of research, scientists still don’t know what kills the dopamine-producing neurons in the brain leading to slowness of movement, tremors, reduced facial expressions, changes in walking, rigidity, postural instability, and more.

Close to 3 million people are currently living with Parkinson’s disease in the United States and approximately 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year, most of them over the age of 60. However, people as young as 20 years old and as old as 100 may develop Parkinson’s disease. The aging of the “baby boomer” generation is expected to boost the number of people living with Parkinson’s disease, which is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s.

Where will the 5k walk and run be held?
The Fox Trot will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Capitol Market. Capitol Market is located at 800 Smith Street (Corner of Capitol and Smith streets) in downtown Charleston, WV. Dogs are welcome with responsible pet owners.

How can I register for the walk and run?
You can register on this website or you can register in-person either on Friday, September 17, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. or directly before the race on Saturday, September 18, 2021 beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Will I get a t-shirt if I participate?
All participants who register prior to September 1 will be guaranteed a race t-shirt. After September 1, t-shirts are not guaranteed. So, please register as soon as you can if a t-shirt is important to your race experience.

Is the Capitol Market Green Chili Shootout after the Fox Trot this year?
Due to Covid-19, the Fox Trot and Green Chili Shootout events have been separated by two weeks. The Green Chili Shootout will be held on Saturday, September 4 while the Fox Trot will be held on Saturday, September 18. Proceeds from the Green Chili Shootout will still be divided between Capitol Market and The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

I want to form a team for the walk, what do I need to do?
You can establish a team while registering for the race. Once you have registered a team, tell your team members to look for your team on this website. The Fox Trot website is www.FoxTrotWV.com.

Can I make a donation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation?
Yes, we encourage contributions to The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) whether you participate in the Fox Trot or not. After you register, you will be asked if you want to make an additional contribution to the MJFF. Our fundraising goal is $100,000.00 for 2021. This will be the largest amount raised by the WV Fox Trot and will put us close to $500,000 raised during the nine years we have held the race.

Do you accept credit card donations?
Credit cards are accepted on the Fox Trot website, but not on race day. There is an ATM machine at Capitol Market which you can use to obtain cash for registration and donation. Checks are accepted, as well. We prefer you make your contribution directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation either through its online portal or by check. Michael J. Fox Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.

Can I or my business become a sponsor of the Fox Trot?
Yes, there are sponsorship opportunities from $500 to $5,000. We are very grateful to all of our sponsors. If you are interested in sponsoring the race, please contact George Manahan at (304) 343-2800 to learn more about sponsorship opportunities.
